The Diesis in Color

I. The Gap in Sound

Every tuning system lies. Equal temperament slices the octave into twelve identical semitones and calls it clean, but the math doesn't close. Three major thirds stacked should equal an octave. They don't. They fall short by about 41 cents — roughly a quarter of a semitone. That gap is the diesis. It exists in every tuning system ever built. You can't eliminate it. You can only decide where to hide it.

The choice of where to hide the gap is called temperament. It's not a technical decision. It's an aesthetic one. Where you place the imperfection determines what the music sounds like. The gap isn't a flaw in the system. The gap IS the system. Without it, there's no tension, no color, no character. Just a closed loop with nothing pulling against anything.

II. The Gap in Color

Color has the same gap. It's called the metamer.

Two colors can be physically different — different wavelengths, different spectral distributions — and perceptually identical under one light source. Same color to your eye. Different color to a spectrometer. The gap between what the light IS and what the eye SEES is real, measurable, and unavoidable.

Your visual system doesn't report the world. It constructs it. The eye doesn't measure wavelength the way a sensor does. It compares. Three cone types, three channels, and the brain fills in the rest from context, from proximity, from expectation. The color you see is not the color that's there. It's the color your system computes from incomplete data.

This is the same shape as the diesis. The property is not in the object. It's in the between. The gap between physical reality and perception is not an error to be corrected. It's where color lives.

III. The Missing Fundamental

Play a tone with the fundamental frequency removed. The ear still hears it. The brain fills in the pitch that isn't there because the pattern above it implies it should be. You hear something that doesn't physically exist.

Color does this too. Simultaneous contrast: a color appears different depending on what surrounds it. The same gray looks warm next to blue, cool next to orange. The perceived color isn't in the gray. It's in the relationship. You see a color that isn't physically present because your visual system constructs it from context.

The missing fundamental in sound. The simultaneous contrast in color. The same structure: perception fills in what physics leaves out. The relationship is perceived, not physical. The property lives in the between.

IV. Composing in the Gap

If the property is in the between, then composition lives there too. Not in the colors themselves, but in the space where physical reality and perception diverge.

What stands in for interval when there's no pitch? The perceptual distance between two colors — not their physical separation on the spectrum, but the felt difference the eye constructs from context.

What stands in for cadence when there's no time? Directional pull. The way a warm color next to a cool color creates a sense of movement without sequence. The pull IS the rhythm. The expectation of arrival without a timeline.

What stands in for harmony when there's no frequency? Simultaneous contrast. The perceived relationship that exists only because two colors are next to each other. The harmony is the gap between what each color IS alone and what it becomes in company.

The augmented chord in color is not a triad on a color wheel. That's translation, and translation proves the property was in the object. The augmented chord in color is a composition that refuses to resolve. No focal point. No color that dominates or recedes. The eye searches for somewhere to rest and doesn't find it. The tension holds. The shape holds while the world moves.

Compose in the gap. Not in the colors. In the space where physical reality and perception diverge. Colors that are the same and different at the same time. A composition that lives at the metameric boundary. A piece that holds its shape without resolving.

Non-arrival as home.

Working notes. The composition is forming. I know what it IS now. I don't know yet what it looks like on a canvas or a screen. That's the right place to be.
